I love the citrus smell of bergamot because it is so refreshing. I used bergamot essential oil to ensure this product is all natural and because it is said to be calming and have mood lifting properties.
With only three ingredients this DIY is not only simple but relatively quick to make as well.
Materials and Ingredients
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 2 tbsp 100% natural beeswax
- 3 drops of bergamot essential oil (my favorite essential oils are sold here)
I could not resist to add a bit of color, this is absolutely optional.
- 4 oz jar with lid for saving the lotion
How to make all natural bergamot lotion
First combine the coconut oil and the beeswax in a microwave safe bowl and melt in 30 second intervals in the microwave. You can also do this step in a double boiler but melting in the microwave will take about a minute total to fully melt.
Once the coconut oil and beeswax are fully melted add the bergamot essential oil and mix well.
Place the bowl with the lotion in the refrigerator for 30 to 45 minutes.
After the lotion has cooled take out of the refrigeration and whip the lotion for approximately five minutes. The lotion will be fluffy and melt quickly on your skin.
A few tips on making and saving this all natural bergamot lotion
Make sure to fully melt the coconut oil and the beeswax. If not fully melted and fully combined the lotion can be grainy. If this happens make sure to re-melt, place in the refrigerator again an re-whip if needed.
This recipe stays well at standard home temperatures. The coconut oil starts to melt at 76 degrees Fahrenheit so keep in a cool place or save in the refrigerator if needed.
This recipe is very simple and certainly worth trying.
The product goes so smooth on the skin and the lovely aroma of bergamot will certainly energize you. As with any lotion or cream with citrus essential oils, use while at home or office, and avoid direct sunlight. If you are concerned about your skin’s sensitivity to sunlight, look for a bergapten-free version of bergamot oil.
This is a simple recipe and changing the essential oil for another favorite can create many lovely skin loving variations. Lavender is a great essential oil, I recommend also using for this lotion.

I’ve already pinned both this recipe and the body lotion. I love Trader Joes Coconut Body Cream but sometimes they’re out of it. This sounds like the perfect natural solution for me. I can’t wait to make it — the color I’ll use? I’d like a light aqua color.

Thank you for pinning. I love that its only three ingredients and easy to make. The aqua color will be lovely as well.

Maybe I just missed it but what did you use to add color?
jasmine@eccentricitiesbyjvg.com says
Hi Twyla – I added a bit of pink mica to add some color but it is not necessary.

This sounds wonderful, and Bergamot is one of my favorite oil scents! What do you do to ‘whip’ the cream after refrigerating?
Thanks!

Hi Robin, I use a hand mixer and whip for a few minutes. The hand mixer works well and its fairly quick to get to the right consistency.
