Chestnut Brown Sugar Fig Holiday Cold Process Soap DIY

In this DIY I am sharing a perfect for the holidays cold process soap DIY. I am using a mix of lovely scents that are great for the holiday season. Chestnut brown sugar and Bronw Sugar Fig fragrance oils mix very well together and make this lovely almost Christmas morning scent that is perfect for the season. This chestnut brown sugar fig cold process soap is a great idea for stocking stuffers and small gifts for friends and family.

For this festive holiday cold process soap DIY I am using a 60:40 mix of Chestnut Brown Sugar and Brwon Sugar Fig fragrance oils. Both by themselves are perfect for the holiday season but combined the scent has an extra depth and a sweeter Christmas morning aroma. The lovely colors traditional of the holidays make this soap a great holiday cold process soap. I used the Evergreen, Merlot Sparkle, and Gold Sparkle micas, all from Brambleberry for this lovely holiday soap.

In this cold process soap DIY I used the hanger swirl technique. This technique was great to use given that the combined fragrance oils accelerated the soap batter just a bit.

I love how the traditional Christmas color combination makes these soaps not only festive but also elegant.

My favorite cold process soap additives

Two of my favorite cold process soap making additives are kaolin clay and colloidal oatmeal. I add them to almost all of my soaps because of the wonderful properties they add to the soaps.

Kaolin clay

Kaolin clay is a very gentle clay used in many cosmetics and face masks. It is not only gentle on the skin but it is also great for anchoring the scents in the soaps. I also think it gives a great slip to the soaps that make the soap super luxurious.

Colloidal oatmeal

Colloidal oatmeal is also used in several skin care products and is considered a skin protectant. It helps retain moisture on the skin. It is very soothing and is usually recommended for people with dry skin. You can skip it but I like it in my soaps because of its excellent skin properties.

Another additive that I tend to add to the soaps is tussah silk. I love how it makes the soap so much smoother and with a lovely silky glide.

For this holiday cold process soap, I used the hanger swirl technique. This soap design technique is one of my favorites, especially when I’m experimenting with new scents and uncertain about how they’ll interact with my specific soap formulations. Generally, I have a sense of the fragrance’s behavior based on the supplier’s notes, but since I combined two scents for this holiday soap, I wanted to keep it simple and use a technique I am very comfortable with.

For the hanger swirl technique, after pouring your soap batter, insert a hanger tool and gently swirl it through the layers, creating unique, flowing patterns that elevate the final look.

Step by Step Hanger Swirl Holiday Cold Process Soap DIY – Chestnut Brown Sugar Fig

  1. Weigh out the butters and coconut oil and melt them in the microwave
  2. Add the liquid oils to the melted butters
  3. Weigh out the water in a separate container
  4. Weigh out the sodium hydroxide (lye) needed for the soap in a separate container
  5. Sprinkle the sodium hydroxide (lye) into the water and mix well, then allow to cool to 85-90 degrees F
  6. Add the lye water solution to the melted oils and butters
  7. Mix using the immersion blender for only a few seconds until you achieve a light trace
  8. Split the batter into three separate containers and mix the green mica colorant into one of the soap containers the merlot sparkle mica into a second container and the gold sparkle mica in the largest container.
  9. Pour the gold sparkle mica on a larger layer into the mold
  10. Pour the evergreen color soap batter side to side, use about half of the soap batter, then do the same with the merlot sparkle mica soap batter.
  11. Repeat the two pour steps above for all three soap batter containers. Save a small amount of the green and red soap to decorate the top of the soap.
  12. Insert the hanger swirl tool into the batter and move from the bottom of the mold to the top using infinity sign movements, a few swirl movements are enough to create beautiful and elegant designs.
  13. Decorate the top of the soap using the remaining soap batter
  14. Allow the soap to go through the saponification process for at least 24 hours
  15. Cut the soap and allow it to cure for four to six weeks
