Making a collage artwork for home decor is not only fun but it can also end up being free if you use things you already have at home to create marks and any paper or fabric can also be used. There is no need to think too much.
How to get inspiration for collage art for home decor
Gather ideas from projects and colors around the house to create a color palette.
Look at vases, candle holders, picture frames, and other items at home and study their patterns and textures.
Take a look at pictures of your favorite vacations or places you would like to visit.
With these items, you can start developing an idea for your collage.
How to make a collage art for home decor
Collect different types of paper. Below are some ideas. You don’t need to purchase these, you can reuse items from home and recycle some paper bags.
Gather some paint, paintbrushes, and any items from the home that you can use to create unique markings and designs.
Get a canvas or any other blank surface to set your design.
Materials recommended for collage art:
- Watercolor paint
- Acrylic paint
- Canvas
- Paint brushes
- Watercolor paper
- Arts and Crafts Tissue paper
- Vintage paper (or an old paper bag)
- Old book pages
- Mod podge
First, start making marks and designs on the paper using different mediums and unique finds. Enjoy the mark-making process, use watercolors, acrylics, oils, markers anything that you have on hand. Let your imagination flow and create unique patterns and designs.
Allow the paint to fully dry before you move to the next step.
Layout the composition for your design. Take a picture so that you can remember as your start layering the paper and fabric.
Start layering the design using glue or mod podge.
For the first layer I used a fabric sample from one of my designs on Spoonflower.
Finish any additional painting over the paper design using acrylics or opaque paint.

- 2 of 8 inch (1/4 in x 1.5 in wood for frame)
- 2 of 10.5 inch (1/4 in x 1.5 in wood for frame)
- ~20 of 5/8 x 18 brad nails
- red mahogany stain
Creating art this way is a great way to enhance and grow your creativity.
