Daily Art Practice and a Free Ocean Scene Printable

A daily art practice is one of the most enriching habits an artist, or anyone looking to engage with their creative side, can develop. It provides a consistent outlet for self-expression, exploration, and mental well-being. Creating art doesn’t have to be a time-consuming or material-intensive endeavor. Just fifteen minutes a day with materials you already have can ignite your creativity, refresh your mind, and provide significant mental health benefits. By approaching your art practice with curiosity and flexibility, even familiar tools and techniques can open new doors to artistic discovery.

The Value of a Daily Art Practice

The greatest value of a daily art practice lies in its consistency. When you make time each day to engage in creativity, no matter how brief, you build a steady connection to your artistic self. Taping into your creative mindset becomes easier when you’re consistently practicing. Over time, this practice can deepen your skills, even if your sessions are as short as 15 minutes. It is about showing up daily, allowing yourself to create without pressure, and understanding that not every piece has to be a masterpiece. The simple act of showing up is transformative.

I love creating art daily, even if it is a small piece like the one I am sharing today. Regular engagement in creative activities fosters mental clarity, reduces stress, and provides a sense of accomplishment. This is particularly true when practicing art, as it encourages mindfulness and focus, which can positively impact your emotional well-being. Art can also provide an outlet for processing emotions and gaining clarity.

A daily art practice fosters a sense of play. When used as a time to play and explore without comparison to others you can increase your creativity and find new ways to show your art style. And always remember, art is subjective, what you like is unique to you.

How to Create a Simple 15-Minute Practice

You might think that 15 minutes is too short to create anything meaningful, but in reality, it’s enough time to spark ideas, test techniques, and gradually build a body of work. Start by setting a timer for 15 minutes. Once you remove the expectation to spend hours working on something, the time constraint can actually be freeing. Use this short time frame as an opportunity to focus on one small task or experiment.

Begin with materials you already have on hand. If you have a set of acrylic paints or watercolor pencils sitting in a drawer, bring them out. The goal is to work with what’s available rather than getting bogged down in acquiring new supplies. By limiting yourself to your current materials, you’re forced to think creatively about how to use them in new ways.

For example, if you have acrylic pouring paints, instead of using them strictly for traditional pouring techniques, try something different. Maybe create an ocean sundown scene as I am showing below.

Let’s create a simple ocean-view art print with acrylic paint

In this short tutorial, I’ve listed the materials below, but you can use any paint and materials you have on hand.

  • Pouring paint kit
  • Various size paintbrushes
  • Watercolor paper
  • Palette paper (you can also just use wax paper)
Materials for painting an ocean scene for a daily art practice

First, paint the sky and the ocean. I used a teal color for the sky a blue for the ocean and a flat paint brush. While the paint is still wet add some white and blend for a color variation on the sky. Add some white paint strokes to the ocean to show some waves.

Paint a few clouds on the sky using white color. I used a Filbert paint brush to paint the clouds.

Using yellow paint, paint the sun at the center between the sky and the ocean and add some yellow strokes to the ocean waves to show the reflection of the sun. I used a round brush for this step.

Use the round brush and a fan brush to create some abstract palm tree shapes using black paint.

You can download the painting below and print it, use it as a postcard for friends and family, or thank you cards.

Exploring Materials in Different Ways

Part of the joy of a daily art practice is the freedom to explore. Often, we buy materials for a specific project, use them in the expected way, and never push them further. By setting aside time each day to play with your supplies, you’ll discover new ways to use them. For instance, watercolor can be combined with ink to add detail to a wash of color, or colored pencils can be layered over acrylics to add texture and fine details.

Repurposing materials like this enhances creativity because it forces you to problem-solve and adapt to the constraints of your resources. When you start viewing your supplies as multi-functional, you open up endless possibilities for expression.

The Benefits of Creativity for Mental Health

Engaging in daily creativity has numerous benefits for mental health. The act of making something with your hands engages your mind in a focused, meditative state, pulling you away from daily stresses. The repetition of strokes or blending of colors can have a calming effect, while the ability to experiment without consequence builds resilience and flexibility in your thinking.

Art, particularly when practiced regularly, also fosters a sense of accomplishment. Finishing even a small piece, or completing your 15-minute practice for the day, provides a feeling of progress and success. This can be incredibly valuable, especially when facing larger tasks or challenges in life.

Embracing the Fun of a Creative Hobby

Above all, a daily art practice can be fun. Art allows you to tap into a playful mindset, where mistakes are just opportunities for discoveries. It’s a space where there are no rules, and where you can explore ideas, color palettes, and techniques without judgment. This sense of freedom is what makes creativity such a rewarding hobby.

In conclusion, a 15-minute daily art practice using materials you already have can bring immense value to your life. It encourages mindfulness, boosts mental health, and fosters a playful spirit of exploration. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just starting out, dedicating a few moments each day to creativity can transform your art and well-being.
