DIY Homemade Shower Melts for Relaxation and Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses essential oils and other aromatic plant compounds for healing and relaxation. Aromatherapy can be used to improve mental and physical well-being. It has great benefits including stress relief from the lavender essential oil and the eucalyptus essential oil is believed to have decongestant properties. I use both all the time and enjoy their properties and I am excited to share this DIY homemade shower melts with you.

These handmade shower melts are easy to make at home and you’ll be able to make them in a short amount of time.

What are shower melts?

Homemade bath melts are also known as homemade shower bombs and homemade shower steamers and shower fizzies. You may see all these names but they all refer to the same thing. Shower melts are similar to bath bombs except that shower melts are used in the shower and only releases aromas to enhance the shower experience. Shower melts are perfect for aromatherapy and you can make many different variations by simply changing the essential oils you use.

Keep in mind that while similar, DIY shower bombs are not the same as bath bombs. Usually, bath bombs include other ingredients such as oils or butters for enhanced skin care. Shower steamers are used for aromatherapy only.

This easy DIY shower bombs recipe is perfect to make at home with only four key ingredients. I also give you a few more ideas to color the handmade shower melts as well as other fun additives that can enhance the appearance and make these perfect for a handmade gift idea for friends and family.

In this DIY shower bombs recipe and tutorial, I show you how to make two different shower bombs with essential oils. One with lavender essential oil and one with eucalyptus essential oil.

Eucalyptus essential oil DIY shower bombs are great for relaxation as well as to help open up the sinuses. The lavender essential oil shower melts are perfect to help with relaxation.

Ingredients and materials to make homemade shower melts

  • 2 cups of baking soda
  • 1 cup of citric acid
  • 2/3 cup arrowroot powder
  • 5 ml each of Eucalyptus and Lavender Essential Oils (find my favorites here)
  • Optional: Mica colorants or Natural Colorants
  • Water in a spraying bottle
  • Large bowl for mixing
  • Measuring cups
  • plastic molds

How to make shower melts at home

Combine the dry ingredients together in a large bowl and blend together using a whisk. Break any clumps and mix well. If mixing by hand make sure to wear gloves.

Spritz with water and mix quickly until you get the right consistency. The mix should be wet enough to stay together when squizzed in the hand but also break up easily.

Split into two separate mixing bowls

To one bowl add the lavender essential oil and to the second bowl add the eucalyptus essential oil. Add the essential oils using a pipette and mix well to combine.

Add the mica colorant if using. I used a light purple color mica for the lavender shower melts and a bit of green mica for the eucalyptus shower melts.

Fill the mold with the mix and press firmly to ensure it is packed. Then allow to dry for a couple of hours. This recipe dried up in about two hours. However, depending on the humidity it may take longer to fully dry.

Use as needed and enjoy your DIY handmade shower melts.

Looking for advice on what went wrong… I followed the recipe exact however, when I was letting them dry in the molds, the mixture expanded so much that it actually cracked the plastic on a few! Any ideas on how to make it so the mixture doesn’t expand? Maybe it was too wet? Help please!

Hello, I think probably the mixture was too wet as you stated. In this case you want to mix a bit longer so that the mixture dries more before placing the mix on the molds. Another potential issue could have been humidity in the area where the shower melts were placed for drying. If there is humidity in the air, the shower melts can also expand. I am in Houston and I’ve had this happen before. You can try to use a dehumidifier.

Mine also expanded so much that it overflowed the molds and made a massive mess while drying. I followed the instructions but I suppose too much water was added?

Yes, for these shower melts and bath truffles the control of the water is very important. Also, the humidity in the space can impact how these behave while drying.

Marbled Clay Palette DIY

These past few days I have been good at keeping my daily painting practice.
