Elena of Avalor is one of the newest Disney princesses and my daughter loves her. I love her too; she is a smart, confident and a gracious leader. Since my daughter has already made plans for herself to be Elena of Avalor for Halloween and have an Elena of Avalor themed birthday party next year, I decided to start planning early. I was not intentionally looking for it but while visiting the new bakery and cake supplies store that opened close to home I found exactly what I needed. I was so inspired when I saw the guitar cookie cutter. And of course, my daughter’s great eye was quickly able to find Elena’s dress cookie cutter. With all the excitement of the great find, I was able to recruit a helper for making the Elena of Avalor sugar cookies. I like the idea of using the sugar cookies for this themed cookies because sugar cookies keep the shape during baking.

For the deep red color to match the colors of Elena’s dress I found some red sanding sugar and red candy melts. These ended up having a deep red color that is very close to the original.
Cookies recipe:
- 1 1/2 cups of butter softened
- 2 cups of granulated sugar
- 3 eggs
- 1 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla (I like the Madagascar Bourbon vanilla – it gives a great flavor)
- 4 cups of all purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons of baking powder
- 1 teaspoon of salt
Instructions for baking the cookies:
Cream the butter and the sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs and the vanilla.
Stir together the dry ingredients: flour, baking powder and salt.
Mix the dry ingredients with the wet ingredients.
Cover and chill for at least one hour.
Preheat the oven to 400F.
Roll out the dough on floured surface approximately 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick.
Cut into shapes using the guitar and dress cookie cutters.
Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake for 6 to 8 minutes in preheated oven.
Cool completely before the next few steps.
Some tips for the cookie dough.
- Take only the amount that you will use and plan to bake out of the refrigerator. Keep the rest cooled in the refrigerator while you work the cookie dough.
- After cutting the shape remove the excess instead of trying to move the cut out cookies. After cutting you can cool in the refrigerator for a few minutes so that is easy to remove from the parchment paper and place in cookie sheet.
Follow the instructions below to decorate the Elena of Avalor sugar cookies:
You will need the candy melt and sugar for this part of the fun.
Melt the candy melts and place in a piping bag. Pipe the candy melt following the edge parttern and then continue to fill inside the completed edge with the candy melt.
Smooth out with a small knife or spoon.
Pour as much sanding sugar as you would like.
This was definitely a fun time and I am certain that my daughter had a great time. I am ready to make these again. The cookies are delicious and its always a great opportunity to teach my daughter how to bake.
Here is a picture of the inspiration and the Elena of Avalor sugar cookies. Now, I just need to focus on the party planning.

Wendy says
I bet your daughter was delighted with these cookies! How wonderful to have a smart, kind princess to admire. 🙂 Using the red candy melts to ice these cookies was a great idea. True red is such a hard color to duplicate in icing!
Jasmine says
Hi Wendy, thanks. We had a great time together working on these cookies. The red candy melts matched the color so well. I am not sure I would have been able to get to match with regular icing.

What a fantastic party. So creative!
My daughter would like an Elena themed party for her birthday in March. I love the idea of the sugar cookies. Where did you find the cookie cutter for the dress? Everything I have found so far is Cinderella like.
Thank you!
