Throughout the year I generally keep the same decorations around the house but enjoy using handmade decorations during fall and the Holiday season. This year I decided to add to the décor with this Autumn leaves painting. Below I give you all the details on how to make this lovely fall painting.
How to make a fall leaves painting for home décor
Materials needed:
- fall colors acrylic paint (in variations of brown, beige, cream, yellow and green)
- 8×10 painting canvas
- 6×11 vinyl (any color will do as this is to use as a template)
- silhouette cameo (I created the template of the leaves and cut it using the Silhouette Cameo, you can use your favorite cutting tool to create a similar template)
- fall leaves template (if you want the studio3 file, you can grab it for free in the resource library – more details on that at the end of the post)
- paint brushes
Steps to make the fall leaves painting for your home décor
Paint the canvas using a cream color acrylic paint. Allow the paint to fully dry before doing the next step so that the vinyl does not peal off the paint from the canvas.
Cut out the leaves pattern in the Silhouette machine using the vinyl. After cutting out the fall leaves design, remove the leaves part from the vinyl.
Carefully transfer the remaining vinyl section to the painted canvas. This will serve as the template and will allow you to paint inside the lines while getting creative applying the fall colors to the leaves section.
Some tips for transferring the template to the canvas:
- It worked best for me to transfer this specific pattern from the long end. It will help keep the template to keep straight when transferring.
- Measure the center of the canvas and the center of the template. Mark the canvas with small dots on the canvas on where you should start transferring the template.
Apply the fall leaves color acrylic paint to the canvas covering the full opening of the fall leaves. Use a round flat brush for this step. It will give the painting an abstract design with not only visual but tactile texture. Use multiple colors at the same time to create a beautiful multi-color effect.
Allow the paint to dry for a few hours. Then carefully remove the fall leaves template from the canvas.
The next step is to decorate your home with the beautiful new creation and enjoy it this fall season. I plan to use it in the fireplace mantle this year, I think it will look perfect there!
I have used a similar painting technique before when I made these Autumn Leaves wood coasters, its another fall project you may like. If you liked this project you may also enjoy the Thanksgiving printable turned beautiful sign, for another great idea for hand made fall decorating projects.

I tried something similar a couple of years back but it was a disaster. Yours look lovely. No smudges – proper defined borders. Perfect and pretty.
