More importantly, your loved ones get a unique Christmas card and you get to explore your imagination and creativity.
One of the reasons why I share all these projects is because it is important to find more creative time in our lives in our busy schedules. I also love handmade gifts from my daughter and this gives me a great opportunity to explore different crafts with her to see what she likes. I am going to be enjoying this for just a bit longer. As she grows up she would want to do other things but for now, I am loving it.
Now let’s make handmade DIY Christmas cards using three different techniques.
1. Watercolor Ornaments Christmas Cards
These watercolor ornaments Christmas cards were the ones I enjoyed the most because I was able to play with watercolors.
Materials for watercolor DIY Christmas Ornaments Cards
- Watercolor paint
- Watercolor paper
- Watercolor brush set
- Green and Red and White Christmas twine
- 2 inch circle cutter scrapbooking paper punch
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Cardstock paper
- Extra strength craft bond glue sticks
- Ruler, paper guillotine, and scissors
- Silver color sharpie pen
First set up the watercolor paint by mixing it with water and getting a small puddle of color in red and green. I brightened the green by adding a bit of yellow as well.
Create two large rectangles with the watercolor paint using the square brush. Let some of the paint accumulate in some areas and create a few brush strokes lifting the brush to create gorgeous watercolor blooms.
Let the watercolor paint dry for about an hour. The watercolor brush strokes could dry faster depending on the paper you use.
Once the watercolor painting is ready collect the rest of the materials and start making the DIY Christmas cards.
Use the stamp to cut the watercolor painting into 2 inch circles.
Draw the ornament hanger on cardstock paper using the sharpie pen.
Arrange the cards with the watercolor circles and the hangers to look like Christmas ornaments. Once you have a design glue it to the cardstock card using the craft bond glue sticks.
Add the twine and ribbon using the hot glue gun and glue sticks.
Create as many designs and cards as you want. As I said earlier the important part is that you have fun and let the creative process flow.
Working on these cards put me right on the Christmas spirit. So I recommend you get your Christmas music out and keep making unique handmade Christmas cards with the two additional methods below.
2. Scrapbook Paper DIY Christmas Cards
I found the scrapbooking paper I am using for this third DIY Christmas card in one of the large slabs that I purchased some time ago and it is just gorgeous. It is a beautiful pattern and I love the winter colors.
I enjoy creating seamless patterns and know the effort that goes into creating these gorgeous designs so kudos to the artist that created these. You can use scrapbooking paper from the store, I’ve recommended some below. If you create your own patterns you can use your own designs as well. I think these turned out gorgeous and are another great unique DIY Christmas card for friends and family.
Materials for scrapbook paper DIY Christmas Cards
- Winter themed scrapbooking paper
- Let it snow stamp
- Stamping ink
- Cardstock paper
- Extra strength craft bond glue sticks
For these cards, I used Christmas tree stencils that I created for an earlier post on Winter box art DIY. I explain how to create the cardstock stencils in that post and the process is fairly simple. I used cardstock paper to create the triangle and a simple base.
Using the stencils and a pencil create the silhouette of the Christmas trees on the scrapbook paper.
Using the scissors cut the scrapbook paper on the lines just created.
Glue the trees to another piece of cardstock paper. I like adding this step to give more strength to the trees and it gives a nice raised look to the cards.
Cut the trees out of the cardstock paper then glue them to the card using the craft bond glue sticks.
Add the Let It Snow stamp in a complementing color.
This card is a 5 x 7 standard card. To get this size simply cut the 8.5 x 11 piece of cardstock paper to 7 x 10 then fold it in half.
3. Washi Tape Christmas cards
For this third technique to create unique and fun handmade Christmas cards I am using decorating tape or most commonly known as washi tape. I am sharing two different styles one with a winter theme and another one in the traditional red and green Christmas colors. These washi tapes DIY Christmas cards are also easy to make.
Materials for washi tape DIY Christmas cards
- Winter themed washi tape
- Traditional Christmas washi tape
- Star stamp
- Stamping ink
- Scissors
- Cardstock paper
The first step is to select your favorite washi tape. I recommend having six or seven different ones to give contrast to the Christmas trees. You can use less than that and simply alternate the patterns as well to get gorgeous designs as well.
Once you have decided on which decorating tape to use cut the tape in various sizes in descending order starting with the longest size first.
Adhere the tape to the cardstock cards in the shape of a Christmas tree.
Finish off the cards by adding a stamp with best wishes and Merry Christmas.
I hope enjoyed making these handmade DIY Christmas cards. If you want to create more handmade greeting cards I have posted another DIY beach inspired handmade card that you might also enjoy.
