Easy do it yourself geometric art for home décor
Sometimes I find myself trying to find specific items for home decorating and I have come to realize sometimes is best to create your own home décor. By creating your own decorating items yourself you have the flexibility of choosing colors, patterns, and align your décor with the various spaces and sizes of the areas at home. Usually I can create my own home décor with my own pictures from Canvas World.

But today I am super excited to share how to make this geometric art painting to decorate the home.
I chose browns and blues colors for this project. These colors match other decorating items in the area in which I want to use the geometric art painting and match the colors of some vases I purchased some time ago and have been wanting to use for some time.
Materials needed for painting the geometric art for home décor
- 24 x 34 inch canvas
- acrylic paint in light brown, dark brown and light cream, and blue colors
- acrylic paint with chalk finish in light blue, grey and light green
- 2 of 24 inches long (1/4 inch thick x 1.5 inch wide wood for frame)
- 2 of 36.5 inches long (1/4 inch thick x 1.5 inch wide wood for frame)
- ~20 of 5/8 x 18 brad nails
- American Walnut wood stain
- painters tape
- paint brushes
Step by Step how to make a geometric art painting for home décor
Paint the full canvas in the blue color. Use the acrylic paint and a brush and cover the full canvas. Allow to dry overnight. This is the color that will show through on the covered areas. You can leave the canvas color as well but I wanted the background to be a lovely blue.
Once the canvas with the coat of light blue is fully dry make the geometric pattern using painters tape. To keep a geometric modern design I made some triangles and kept straight lines for this pattern. I used two different sizes of painters tape to add another layer of contrast to the geometric art painting.
The areas that are covered with the painters tape will remain the beautiful blue color while all the other areas will have the different colors selected. In this project I selected various shades of brown and cream and the blue, grey and green with the chalk finish paint.
Paint all the areas of the defined pattern using the acrylic paint in alternating shades of brown and the grey, green and blue chalk finish paints.
I decided to use the chalk finish paint to give yet another layer of contrast to the geometric art painting.
One of the benefits of having the background color on the canvas is that the chalk finish paint will adhere better to the canvas. I tried to paint directly on the canvas with chalk finish paint in the past and the paint did not adhere well. I recommend painting the canvas first with the standard acrylic paint. Then layer over the chalk finish paint as described in this project.
Allow the paint to fully dry on the canvas before removing the painters tape and that is it. You now have a wonderful piece of art that is a practical home decorating item.
DIY Frame for the geometric art
To make a simple frame for the geometric art cut the wood pieces for the short end of the canvas at the actual size of the canvas. For the long end cut an extra half inch longer so that the long side of the frame extends to the end of the short end.
Stain the wood frame pieces with the wood stain. I used the American Walnut stain color. I really like how the color turned out. Allow to fully dry; I let these sit overnight but I am sure that being so small and with a thin coat the frame can be built on the same day.
To build the frame attach the wood pieces to the canvas using the small brad nails. Start with the shorter sizes where the wood pieces are the same size as the canvas frame. Use a hammer to put a nail in each corner first, then add a nail in the middle. Then add more nails in between. I did five nails in total for each side.
Lastly attach the long ends of the frame using the brad nails and hammer. The long end part of the frame will extend to cover the short end of the frame. This will give a box style simple frame to the beautiful work of art.
The next step is to make sure to hang it in a place at home that you can showcase and enjoy the geometric art painting.
Ideas on how to use geometric art for home décor
This is another easy project for home décor but the possibilities are endless. Use this large size canvas for large areas like a dining room wall or generally above the console table. Another great way to use a project like this is to use smaller canvas size such as 8 x 10 to create multiple patterns and hang as gallery wall art.
