Hand Painted Christmas Ornaments

Hand painted Christmas ornaments close up Pinterest pin.

Today I want to share another fun Christmas project. I love making DIY Christmas ornaments and this is a fun hand-painted Christmas ornaments DIY. It is a great project to work by yourself or work with the family. It is wonderful to see how the unique artist’s voice shows for everyone in the family!

This is a great yet simple craft that shows you how to infuse your personality, colors, and artistic style into your Christmas decor. I have a few more DIY ornaments that I have shared over the years. After you finish this hand-painted Christmas ornament DIY head over to my Decoupage Christmas Ornaments, Faux Snow Christmas Ornaments, Cork Christmas Ornaments, and my Scrapbooking Paper Wreath Christmas Ornaments.

For today’s project, I am using gouache paint. You can also use acrylic gouache as well for your unique Christmas ornaments.

Materials needed for the hand-painted Christmas ornaments DIY:

  • 4 clear glass craft ornaments
  • Gouache paint
  • Paint brushes
  • Crafting foam block
  • Craft sticks

How to make a hand-painted Christmas ornament

First, collect all the materials and select the colors to use and the theme you want to design. In this case, I painted a simple vine with lots of leaves in white and holly berries. I then accented the design with gold to make these Christmas ornaments more festive.

Set up the color in a color pallet and select a large brush and some smaller round brushes.

Set up the craft foam board and craft sticks by inserting the sticks approximately 1/2 inch deep. Just enough to hold the glass baubles while drying.

Paint at least two layers of the base color. After painting the first layer allow the ornaments to fully dry before applying the second layer.

After the second base layer of paint is fully dry then paint the vine using the white color.

While the vine is drying, paint the holly berries using the red gouache paint.

Allow for both the vines and the holly berries to fully dry.

Add the leaf vanes and the details on the holly berries using the gold gouache paint.

Insert the hand-painted Christmas ornaments on the craft sticks and allow the design to fully dry.

Once the ornaments are dry, insert the top cap.

Finish the ornaments using a ribbon and make a bow.

Enjoy the hand-painted Christmas ornaments in your home decor!

I like the colors on this design but ended up using a larger brush than I wanted.

This design is just an idea for a simple design, of course, you can make more complex and beautiful designs. I would love to see what you make.

The sky is the limit on how many variations you can make with so many colors and festive designs.

The idea of this project is to reflect your personality and spark your creativity and imagination. Also, to have a fun afternoon creating something unique that you can enjoy for years to come. This project is also a great gift idea!

I hope you get some inspiration from this project and get to try it soon.  I would love to see what you make!

Stay creative, and stay unique!
