My birthday was only a few days ago and I got a beautiful bouquet of pink roses. The roses were gorgeous and are the inspiration for this hand painted rose soap tutorial.

I am using a rose mold that I purchased recently and melt and pour soap for this project. I am looking forward to using the rose mold for cold process soap; that will be a future project! In this tutorial I am also using a new type of melt and pour that I tested recently. I am using the Oatmeal melt and pour soap base. I tried the oatmeal melt and pour soap base not too long ago and love it. It is very bubbly and perfect for handmade soap projects. It is also a natural soap base which I definitely appreciate.
First let me show you the beautiful roses that inspired this project. I kept looking and smelling these roses almost all day.
Materials to make this hand painted rose soap
- Rose mold – I purchased mine from Brambleberry but I found some others at amazon as well
- 16 oz Oatmeal melt and pour soap base
- 1/8 tsp Bright pink color mica
- Rose petals
- microwave safe measuring cup
- Small paint brush
- knife
- Alcohol
- 1.5 ml Wild Rose fragrance (optional)
Step by step instructions for how to make hand painted rose soaps
First, cut the oatmeal melt and pour soap base into small squares using a knife or a soap cutter. This helps melt the soap easier and more evenly.
Place the cut soap in the microwave safe measuring cup and melt in 30 second intervals until fully melted.
Add the pink mica to the melted soap. For this project I added approximately 1/8 tsp to match the color of the roses that inspired this project. Mix the mica well using a spoon.
I added 1.5 ml of Wild Rose fragrance oil, which is my favorite rose fragrance. It smells really good! Fragrance is really optional or you can also use a few drops of your favorite essential oil.
Place rose petals on the inside of the rose mold.
Pour the melted and colored soap slowly into the molds. Use a small spoon to pour some of the soap over the rose petals so that some can show on the surface of the soap. Some of the rose petals will float around which is OK. Some of the rose petals will show as the soap is used.
Allow the soap to cool on the mold for at least an hour, then remove from the mold.
Hand painting rose soaps
Mix a small amount of the bright pink mica with a small amount of alcohol. The alcohol will evaporate and leave the soap painted with the mica. Paint the soap rose petals using the small brush and the mix of mica and alcohol.
Have fun painting the borders of the petals. For this project I made four soaps and all were painted a bit different. I like that its just like the roses that inspired these soaps, all a bit different but absolutely beautiful.
Allow the soaps to dry for a few minutes.
These rose soaps are great for gifts and decorating. After you use them once the paint will go away but the lovely rose petals will start to show more as the soap is being used.
I love making soap, its a great craft and I love experimenting with fragrances and colors. Also, melt and pour soaps are easy to make and these days there are great natural options with oatmeal, such as the one used in this project as well as others with lovely shea and cocoa butter.
