I want to introduce to you a great ingredient that is the perfect addition to skincare products in this stearic acid body butter DIY. Stearic acid is an isolated fatty acid from other butters and fats. It is found and extracted from cocoa butter, shea butter, kokum butter, and sunflower oil.

Stearic acid for skin care products is available as small beads or pellets. It is used in skincare products to add hardness to lotions and body butters and it is a great replacement for some of the wax in lip balms and solid lotion bars. Because of its higher melting point, stearic acid is great for hot climates and for products that need to ship during the hot summer months.
Ingredients to make the stearic acid body butter – all natural DIY
- 1 oz shea butter
- 1 oz mango butter
- 1 oz of sweet almond oil
- 1 oz of stearic acid
- 1 1/2 tbsp of arrowroot powder
- 4 drops of Lavender Essential Oil (optional)
- 1 – 8 oz plastic jars or 2 – 4 oz plastic jars
- Hand mixer
- Mixing bowls
- Mica colorant (optional)
How to make an all-natural stearic acid body butter
Weigh out the stearic acid, shea butter, and mango butter. Place these ingredients in a heat-safe mixing bowl and place the heat-safe bowl over a double boiler. Allow the ingredients to fully melt. For the size of this stearic acid body butter formulation, it will take about ten minutes to fully melt at medium heat. Make sure all ingredients are fully melted.
Pour the melted butters and stearic acid into a mixing bowl and add the sweet almond oil.
Mix all the ingredients together for a few seconds using a spatula and place them in the refrigerator for about half an hour to 45 minutes. This stearic acid body butter formulation cools and solidifies faster because of the use of the stearic acid. That is another reason why I am in love with this body butter. It is even faster to make.
Remove the body butter from the refrigerator and add the arrowroot powder and the Lavender essential oil if you plan to use it. Mix for one to two minutes with the hand mixer to fully combine. Continue to mix for another 5 to 7 minutes to get an excellent light body butter consistency.
I decided to use a pink-blue color mica to enhance the appearance and give some lovely spring and summer color to this lovely body butter.
Mix a small amount of mica with the sweet almond oil and place in a line on cling wrap. Scoop out the body butter and place it over the lines of mica.
Place the cling wrap with the body butter in a piping bag.
Pipe the stearic acid body butter into the saving jars.
This body butter is whipped therefore keep in mind that it will double in size. For the four ounces in this formulation, I was able to fill one full 4-ounce jar and 3/4 of a second 4-ounce jar.
I do not use a preservative in this DIY. However, I do recommend using a preservative if you decide to use this body butter formulation in items that you intend to sell. My recommended preservative is Optiphen Plus which is considered a natural preservative.
How to save the whipped stearic acid body butter
Transfer the body butter to your favorite container and use it as needed. Either glass or plastic containers will work. Make sure to use an air-tight seal container as it will help with keeping the body butter longer. Keep the body butter in a cool place and use it as needed. This has a higher melting point because of the use of stearic acid. It is perfect for the summer months.
This stearic acid body butter is perfect to use after a shave. It just goes smooth and light on the skin and with the lavender essential oil scent, it gives a very relaxing aroma.
How much stearic acid to use in body butters?
How much stearic acid depends on what are the characteristics that it will contribute to the skin care product. For this stearic acid body butter I used 25% but it can be used up to 40%. Stearic acid gives a satiny and smooth feel to skin care products which makes it also great for creams and lotions.
