How to Make a Watercolor Mother’s Day Card Printable
While I love creating art digitally I often paint on paper with either watercolors or ink and then scan or vectorize depending on how I plan to use my art. In this case, I wanted to show you how to create your own with your style and painting. I am sure whatever you create will be perfect, remember art is subjective and it is more meaningful when it is a special gift for Mom!
I am super excited to share this DIY so we will go straight to it.
First select your favorite watercolors, brushes, and paper and create your art. I decided to paint simple purple flowers for this DIY but it is up to you what you want to paint for this special Mother’s Day Card DIY.
Scan your art or take a picture of your art. I prefer to scan the art because I can scan at a high resolution, for example, 600 dpi and I can then use the motif for several applications. For this project scanning at 300 dpi is sufficient.
Import the file into either Adobe Photoshop or Affinity Photo and remove the background. I find that if I am on my desktop computer I use Photoshop but if I am using my tablet I use Affinity Photo for this step. Use whichever you are more comfortable with.
After removing the background create a separate file with dimensions of 10″ wide and 7″ tall. Place your motif on the new file and add a rectangle for the background.
Add your message to the front of the card.
Now your card is ready to be exported and printed out.
Export the card as a jpeg or png and print it at home on cardboard paper.
You can also take the file to places like Walmart or Target and they will print it nicely for you.
I placed the card on an 8.5″ x 11″ template below for you to print and score! You can simply “save as” the picture below or download the file here. PDF file here.
I hope you had fun making this Mother’s Day card printable and DIY.
My Current Favorite Tools for Digital Art
While I love painting in watercolors and keep my daily practice of painting at least for fifteen minutes each day, I have been spending a lot more time on digital art. I find that working digitally saves me the time to have to scan and clean up the motifs to create the patterns or illustrations. I don’t think I’ll ever stop using my watercolors but there are a few tools that are making my digital art creation an enjoyable and more efficient process.
While these tools are very inexpensive they are great tools to add to your creative process. I hope you check them out. Let me know if you like them.
Apple Pencil Fine (0.78mm) tip – this tip makes the apple pencil truly feel like a pencil. The fine tip is smooth on the surface and along with the the paperlike below it is perfect for creating art on your tablet.
Paperlike Screen Protector – this paperlike screen protector is really great. It takes the slippery feel of the tablet screen and makes it feel just like you are writing and drawing on paper. It gives the surface the perfect drag to create beautiful art.
Drawing Glove – this glove is perfect for avoiding those marks and lines that keep messing up my art. I have a hard time when I have to go back and find where the line or dot was created, in which layer, and see if I can fix it without damaging the design. No more having to redo parts of your design – this glove is great!
