Shea butter and colloidal oats are two of the most wonderful ingredients for skin care products. Shea butter absorbs very quickly on the skin and has really wonderful moisturizing properties and high amounts of vitamins A and E. Colloidal oatmeal is generally used for soothing the skin in various skin care products. I am super excited to share this Shea Butter and Colloidal Oats whipped soap tutorial. This post is the third installment of the whipped soap collection. The first one is the Coffee and Brown Sugar Whipped Soap Scrub and the second one is the Falling in Love Shea Butter Whipped Soap. The fourth installment is the Facial Whipped Soap with Activated Charcoal and Bentonite Clay.

Whipped soap is fantastic for DIY skin cleanser products. I love that it can take good amounts of oils and butters without impacting the quality and it also lends itself to so many wonderful variations. This whipped soap feels super luxurious on the skin and a little goes a long way when using a shower pouf.
The whipped soap base is known as a foaming bath butter. This whipped soap base is my favorite when I don’t make it myself because it makes lots of creamy bubbles and I can customize it with different skin loving oils and butters and make so many different variations. I’ve shared how to make whipped soap base at home in another post if you want to try and make it yourself instead of purchasing the foaming bath butter.
This Shea Butter and Colloidal Oats whipped soap is also a great idea for a handmade gift.
Ingredients and materials for the Shea Butter and Colloidal Oats skin loving whipped soap
- 8 oz foaming bath butter
- 1.5 oz Shea Butter
- 1 tbsp Vegetable Glycerin
- 1/2 tsp Vitamin E Oil
- 1 tbsp Colloidal Oatmeal
- 2 ml Fragrance (I used Oatmeal, Milk, and Honey Fragrance Oil from Brambleberry)
- 1/8 tsp Mica soap colorants (I used a gold color mica)
- Hand mixer
- Mixing bowls
- 2 – 8 oz jars with lid
How to make Shea Butter and Colloidal Oats whipped soap
Separate 8 ounces from the foaming bath butter soap base container and whip for approximately two to three minutes. It will start to fluff and will be easier to whip.
Once the base has been whipped for a few minutes add the shea butter, vegetable glycerin, and vitamin E oil and whip for a few more minutes to fully incorporate.
Add the gold color mica, colloidal oatmeal, and fragrance. Continue to whip for another two to three minutes until fully combined and enough air is incorporated to get a fluffy consistency.
Other oils that are great for this recipe and great for the skin that can replace the shea butter are jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, olive oil, or rice bran oil.
Lastly, put the Shea Butter and Colloidal Oats whipped soap in a piping bag and pipe it into plastic jars.
To decorate this gorgeous whipped soap I added some oats on top, and now it’s just perfect. I have added a list of other whipped soap DIYs at the end of this post. I hope you take a look at those and find some more whipped soap DIY ideas to try.
The oatmeal, milk, and honey fragrance is just amazing. It is one of my favorites and I always keep soap at home that I have scented with it because it is just lovely.
How much colloidal oatmeal per pound of soap to add to the soap?
How much colloidal oatmeal per pound of soap? I get asked about how much colloidal oatmeal you should add to soap very often. I add colloidal oatmeal to all my cold process soaps. For cold process soap, I recommend using one tablespoon per pound of oil. This is what I normally use and the soaps turn out great. For whipped soap, I recommend one tablespoon for every 8 ounces of whipped soap base. In this whipped soap recipe, I used one tablespoon and it is just perfect. For melt and pour soap, I recommend a small amount since it does not fully dissolve. Since the colloidal oatmeal is so fine it will not really exfoliate but you will still have its great skin soothing properties.
A note about preservatives
You will notice that for this small batch recipe, I did not include a preservative. However, it is an optional ingredient. While the base for this whipped soap contains a preservative and vitamin E is an antioxidant and can prolong the shelf life of the product, I do recommend using a preservative if the soap is going to be in direct contact with water. Also, if you make this product to sell it is always a good idea to include a preservative.
I usually recommend Optiphen Plus as a preservative. Its recommended usage is from 0.5 to 1.5% of the total amount of product you are making.

Hi Jasmine,
I would like to check with you how long this scrub can last since oat is being added in without preservative?
Thank you.

Hi Mitchelle,
Thank you for stopping by and for your question. For a small batch like the one in this recipe if you plan to use within one to two months and do not introduce any water it will keep well in my experience. While the base has a preservative, if you plan to make larger batches or take more than a month or so to use I do recommend to use a preservative. I also recommend using a preservative if you plan to sell the product. Preservatives are used at .5% to 1% of the total amount of product. Make sure to check the manufacturer recommendation for the preservative you choose.

How do you actually use this soap? Wash cloth, loofah? It seems awkward. TIA.
jasmine@eccentricitiesbyjvg.com says
Hi Marti, this soap can be used with a wash cloth or loofah or even directly on the skin. It makes copious amounts of bubbles and it is wonderful.

I am so excited to make this with my daughter. She wants to make and sell it at the local farmers market. What do you recommend to use for a preservative?
jasmine@eccentricitiesbyjvg.com says
Hi Shondra, I am so glad you want to make this whipped soap with your daughter and sell it at farmers markets. One of the preservatives that I recommend is the natural optiphen. This one is paraben free and formaldehyde free. Find it on amazon here: https://amzn.to/3efntgk

Is there a variation that would allow the consistency to be thin enough to dispense in a pump?

Thank you Donna. If you want to make it a bit more fluid you can add a bit more of the liquid oil. Maybe also whipping for a bit longer can help.
