How to make the best soy wax melts
To make the best soy wax melts at home it is best to select the best possible soy wax that will hold a good amount of scent. I choose paraffin free to make sure it does not contain any chemicals and is 100% natural. There are a few that I can recommend that I have added to the list below. The next item to consider is the melting point. A relatively medium melting point will be great to melt the wax melt in either the electric or tea-light wax warmer.
Essential oils are always great for wax melts and can provide great aromatherapy in the room. I do not mind using fragrances. I always purchase my fragrances from reputable businesses and all the fragrances I use are phthalate free. To keep the wax melts all natural use the essential oil blend I describe below, this is great for the fall. In this recipe, I am using a blend of wonderful phthalate-free fragrance oils perfect for fall.

Instructions on how to make the best soy wax melts
Soy wax melts can be made in a few simple steps. For the small mold I am using I only needed about 3 ounces of soy wax chips. I decided to split it into two different colors. I used green and a deep purple-red to give these wax melts the beautiful color-changing appearance of the tree leaves in autumn.
- Weigh out 1.5 ounces of wax flakes and place them in the microwave-safe measuring cup. Melt the wax in 30-second intervals until most of it is melted. Finish melting off any pieces using the spatula and mixing the wax until all the wax chips have melted.
- Add a small amount of wax chips candle dyes. Most manufacturers will provide a percentage to use to color the candles. This is a good number to use. If this information is not available start with a very small amount and add as needed to get a lovely color.
- Prepare the fragrance blend. For this fall wax melts I used one part each of the Pumpkin Pecan Waffles, Pumpkin Crunch Cake, and Christmas Cravings. This blend is just lovely and gives a wonderful autumn aroma. Each soy wax manufacturer provides the maximum fragrance recommended to add to the soy wax. In this case, the recommended value is 6% to 8%. I decided to use 6% for these wax melts.
- Add the fragrance blend to the melted soy and blend well.
- Once the pouring temperature is reached, pour the colored and scented soy wax into the mold.
- Repeat the same steps for the second layer using the second color. Wait until a film start forming in the first layer before pouring the second layer.
- Allow the soy wax melts to harden for four to six hours then unmold and place in a plastic container until ready to use.
- Enjoy the lovely aroma and ambiance of handmade wax melts for fall.
You can make this recipe any time of the year just by changing the scent. I have shared another wax melt DIY with Banana and Bubble Gum scent that are prefect for summer.
Tips for making soy wax melts
If you are starting out start with a soy wax specifically marketed for wax melts, these have a higher melting point and will be easier to get the wax melts out of the molds.
If using a soft wax that is recommended for container candles you can add a small amount of beeswax or stearic acid to make it a harder wax melt and be able to more easily remove from the mold. Both beeswax and stearic acid are natural ingredients. Beeswax melts or candles are another great DIY project to try. Stearic Acid is more commonly known for its use in skin care products. It is another alternative to use if using container soy wax. It will help harden and shrink the wax melts and make it easier to release from the mold. The stearic acid will also help the wax melt burn longer.
If you prefer to use essential oils try the blend below. This blend also gives a lovely autumn scent. Remember the ratios to increase the amount if using a larger size mold or using it in larger candles.
- 4 drops of Cedarwood
- 3 drops of Cinnamon
- 2 drops of Clove
- 2 drops of Nutmeg
How to use soy wax melts
To use the DIY soy wax melts, simply take one and place it in the wax warmer. If using an electric wax warmer there may be various heating speeds. Use the fastest heating speed first then set to lower melting speed once the aroma start filling the room. For the wax warmer that uses the tea lights, simply light the wick and watch the beautiful wax melt, melt as it fills the room with the lovely autumn aroma.
How to make soy wax melts last longer
Both of the ingredients I described above that help with hardening are also two ingredients that help the wax melts burn longer. Adding either beeswax and stearic acid to the wax melts will be a great addition to any wax melts DIY project.
