Using freezer paper to stencil fabric is a great way to create very unique stenciled items. This easy tutorial of stenciled party favor bags using freezer paper is an easy way to customize party favors for any event. I decided to use some flowers for the design of these stenciled party favors bags.

Earlier I posed a tutorial on how to make embossed soap party favors. These stenciled party favor bags are perfect for those small soaps.
Let’s dive right into it.
Materials to make stenciled party favor bags using freezer paper
- 4 – 3 x 4 inch Muslin party favor bags
- fabric paint in blue, white and pink
- freezer paper
- Silhouette cutting mat
- Silhouette machine or your favorite cutting machine
- transfer paper or clear magic cover (I get the clear magic cover from the dollar store)
- small foam brushes
Set up the design in the Silhouette machine.
First set up the flower design using the Silhouette studio software.
Place freezer paper glossy side down on the Silhouette cutting mat. Cut the flower pattern using maximum cut tip of two. The freezer paper is very thin and anything more than that will cut into the cutting mat because of the size of the freezer paper.
Before removing the freezer paper stencil from the cutting mat place the transfer paper over the freezer paper. This will make sure all parts of the stencil stay together. Then turn over the mat and remove the cutting mat from the stencil. Now the glossy part of the freezer paper is facing up. Place this glossy part down on top of the muslin bags.
Carefully remove the transfer paper making sure all the pieces from the freezer paper stencil stay together. Remove all the transfer paper backing then remove the pieces of the flower stencil that will be painted.
Iron over the freezer paper to fully attach the stencil to the muslin bags.
I like using this technique for stenciling fabric because it adheres very well and the designs turn out very crisp. And with a single roll of freezer paper I can do so many projects… and freezer paper is fairly inexpensive as well.
Remember – the glossy part goes on to the fabric and sticks perfectly well when ironed on…
Stenciling the design
Next, paint the designs using the fabric paint and the small round brushes. For the small spaces I used painting brushes that look like the eye shadow brushes.
I painted some of the flowers in pink, blue and white. These turned out bright and beautiful.
Allow the fabric paint to dry, then remove the freezer paper stencil. Then use the new beautifully stenciled favor bags for your favorite party favors.
I am already thinking all the other project ideas to share using this stenciling technique for fabric. It is definitely fun for those of us who enjoy making all these crafts.
Other ways for stenciling include using vinyl. While I love using vinyl for other crafts, for example, the Autumn Leaves Wood Coasters using vinyl stenciling on wood and Etched Merry Christmas plates for etching glass. I find the use of freezer paper great for stenciling on fabric.
These party favor bags were definitely fun to make. I am going to start writing down all the ideas that this project sparked for using freezer paper for stenciling.
