Today I wanted to share a simple “how to” on a way to bring a bit of personality and glamour to any home entertaining. While at the World Market the other day, I found that they now have these simple but sturdy glass plates. As soon as I saw them, lots of ideas came through my mind. Of course, the first thought was all the great food I can put on them. However the next immediate thought was that these were fantastic for personalizing and give them a unique theme. And then the next thought was, yes! another opportunity for DIY crafts. How wonderful that it is fairly easy to decoupage glass plates with any theme for any party, or just to add to the kitchen décor. And of course, do not forget that personalizing and DIY make them a unique item to have!

What I find more appealing about this reverse decoupage is that you can still use the front of the plate for food directly on the plate. At the same time make your food look even more glam.
What you will need
- Glass plate
- Your favorite, and perfect for your home décor scrapbook or decorative paper
- Dishwasher safe Mod podge
- Foam brush
- Cutting mat
- Roller cutter
First clean the plates thoroughly. After I wash with soap and water, I like to clean them with some alcohol. Then, I make sure not to introduce any oil from my hands after cleaning.
Then cut the paper to the size of your plate. The ones I used here are 6 inch square plates. In order for the corners to align properly, cut the corners at 45 degree angles the length of the bevel so that the corners can overlap.
Apply a thin layer of mod podge on the back of the plates and place the decorative paper with the decoration facing the front of the plate.
Squeeze out any wrinkles that form and allow to fully dry.
If the plates are going to be used often, you can also apply a layer of polyurethane or paint to the back of the plate (and this is completely optional). This will make them more water resistant. Although I used the dishwasher safe mod podge, I recommend to wash by hand and dry quickly.
And voila, reverse decoupage glass plates…
It is so much fun and rewarding to see the final product. As I enjoyed so much the process, since DIY crafts is one of my favorites hobbies, I very much enjoy and look forward to the conversations and memories that will be made with this unique and glamorous plates.
I cannot get over how much I like these plates. When I first saw the scrapbook paper I had to get it. But being able to have it now in a practical item that I use almost daily is pretty awesome! I think this technique is great to create unique kitchenware, you can also take a look at the Decoupage Autumn Dessert Plates I made for fall.
