DIY Christmas clay ornaments

How fun is it to get ready for Christmas?  Well, I am very excited and enjoying working on some fun projects for the season.  Today I want to share a DIY on handmade Christmas clay ornaments.  Another easy DIY that will make the decorations unique this season.  Last week I shared the Etched Christmas plates, check out that tutorial here.

DIY Christmas clay ornaments

This was yet another great project that I worked on with my daughter.  I think she is taking it from me to work on crafts and art projects.

How to make Christmas clay ornaments

Christmas clay ornaments steps

1. Gather the materials.  Choose your favorite colors for the ornaments.  I used the traditional green and red but was thinking of also making a few more in blue, pink, and gold.  Below is the list of materials you will need for this project.

  • oven-bake polymer clay red, green, white, and brown
  • clay sculpting tools
  • glittery paint
  • brush
  • parchment paper
  • baking sheet

2. Remove about an inch thick piece of the red and green clay and sculpt the triangle that will make the Christmas tree.  Add small round pieces of clay to create the ornaments on the Christmas tree and roll long strings of the clay to create the garland.

3. Remove 1/2 inch of the brown clay and make the tree trunk.  Attach the tree trunk to the Christmas tree.  Place parchment paper on a baking sheet and place the ornaments on the parchment paper.  Then, bake the clay as per the instructions on the wrapper.  It is usually recommended to bake for 15 minutes for a 1/4-inch thick clay design.

4. After the clay is baked, allow it to cool for a few minutes in the oven, and then remove it from the oven and allow it to fully cool.  Apply a thick layer of glitter paint.

I think these turned out very nice and will go very well with the traditional ornaments on my Christmas tree.

These were definitely fun to make.  If you like clay projects you can also take a look at my Clay Pumpkin Patch DIY project, the Clay Palette DIY, and the Clay Autumn Magnets DIY projects.  All are great projects for the fall but can be of inspiration to create other clay projects for the various seasons.

They turned out great Jasmine. To me homemade ornaments are always better than store bought and all the fun you must have had with your daughter, those memories last a lifetime and the ornaments will be treasured for as long.
