I love making wax melts and have shared some wax melts DIY before. After you follow this DIY, head over to my Wax Melts DIY for Autumn and Banana Bubble Gum Wax Melts DIY I think you will enjoy those as well.
One of the reasons I like making wax melts is that you can use natural ingredients such as using natural soy wax. Also, there are so many wonderful scents to choose from either through using a fragrance oil or so many unique variations using essential oils. I am using a fragrance oil that compares to the twisted peppermint scent. I’ve purchased this scent in the past from another soap-making business but I am excited to test this one today. I love the scent “out-of-the-bottle” and it is very sweet and definitely has a very strong peppermint aroma.
How to select the best natural soy wax for your wax melts
To make the best soy wax melts at home consider selecting a soy wax that will hold a good amount of scent, the one that I am currently using states it can hold up to 11% of fragrance oil. I always choose paraffin free to make sure it does not contain any chemicals and is 100% natural. There are a few that I can recommend that I have added to the list below. The next item to consider is the melting point. A relatively medium melting point will be great to melt the wax melt in either the electric or tea-light wax warmer.
Essential oils are always great for wax melts and can provide great aromatherapy in the room. I do not mind using fragrances. I always purchase my fragrances from reputable businesses and all the fragrances I use are phthalate free.
To keep the wax melts all-natural use the essential oil blend I describe below, this is great for the fall. Or just peppermint essential oil. But today, I am loving the aroma of this peppermint fragrance oil.
Ingredients and materials to make soy wax melts at home
- Natural soy wax
- Candle dyes
- Fragrance (Comparable to Twisted Peppermint – from AFI* see note above)

- Infrared thermometer
Instructions on how to make the best soy wax melts
Soy wax melts can be made in a few simple steps. For the small mold I am using I only needed about 2.5 ounces of soy wax chips.
Weigh out 2.5 ounces of wax flakes and place them in the microwave-safe measuring cup. Melt the wax in 30-second intervals until most of it is melted. Finish melting off any pieces using the spatula and mixing the wax until all the wax chips have melted.
Add a small amount of wax chips candle dyes. Most manufacturers will provide a percentage to use to color the candles. This is a good number to use. If this information is not available start with a very small amount and add as needed to get a lovely color. I am using Blush Pink from Brambleberry for this DIY.
Add the fragrance oil. Each soy wax manufacturer provides the maximum fragrance recommended to add to the soy wax. The same is true for the fragrance manufacturer. In this case, the recommended value is up to 11% of fragrance oil for this specific natural wax that I am using. AFI, the fragrance manufacturer of this peppermint fragrance oil recommends 3 to 10%. I decided to use 10% for these wax melts since I am testing and my family enjoys this scent.
Mix the fragrance well using the spatula.
Once the pour temperature is reached, pour the colored and scented soy wax into the mold.
Allow the soy wax melts to harden for two to three hours then unmold and place in a plastic container until ready to use.
Enjoy the lovely aroma and ambiance of handmade peppermint wax melts.
In the DIY I recommend keeping the wax melts in the mold for up to three hours. This may sound like a lot but it allows the slow cooling of the wax and avoids damaging or taking out too early and the wax melts being still too soft.
Since I was testing today, I actually ended up removing the wax melts from the mold in just one hour. I wanted to see how they hardened with such a large load of fragrance oil (10%). I am happy to say that they unmolded great but they were still a bit soft. They needed the extra time on the mold. I would say stick to the two to three hours recommendation to be on the safe side.
Tips for making soy wax melts
If you are starting out start with a soy wax specifically marketed for wax melts, these have a higher melting point and will be easier to get the wax melts out of the molds.
If using a soft wax that is recommended for container candles you can add a small amount of beeswax or stearic acid to make it a harder wax melt and be able to more easily remove from the mold. Both the beeswax and stearic acid are natural ingredients. Beeswax melts or candles are another great DIY project to try. Stearic Acid is more commonly known for its use in skin care products. It is another alternative to use if using container soy wax. It will help harden and shrink the wax melts and make it easier to release from the mold. The stearic acid will also help the wax melt burn longer.
If you prefer to use essential oils try the blend below. This blend also gives a lovely autumn scent. Remember the ratios to increase the amount if using a larger size mold or using it in larger candles.
- 4 drops of Cedarwood
- 3 drops of Cinnamon
- 2 drops of Clove
- 2 drops of Nutmeg
How to use soy wax melts
To use the DIY soy wax melts, simply take one and place it in the wax warmer. If using an electric wax warmer there may be various heating speeds. Use the fastest heating speed first then set to lower melting speed once the aroma start filling the room. For the wax warmer that uses the tea lights, simply light the wick and watch the beautiful wax melt, melt as it fills the room with the lovely autumn aroma.
How to make soy wax melts last longer
Both of the ingredients I described above that help with hardening are also two ingredients that help the wax melts burn longer. Adding either beeswax and stearic acid to the wax melts will be a great addition to any wax melts DIY project.
