I’ve been wanting to explore using gouache and acrylic gouache. Some of the reasons why artist love working with gouache and acrylic gouache are that the paint dries really fast being able to add layers in no time. Artist love using acrylic gouache because it provides a velvet-like texture and rich pigments that produce vibrant illustrations. I’ve also been experimenting with line art and using this acrylic gouache was perfect to combine both in this fun, quick, and easy art project.
I love exploring new techniques and mediums, this one is perfect to create a lovely piece of art in a short amount of time to create a beautiful and unique card or any other surface product with your lovely creation.
Remember, art is subjective, as long as you love it and have fun creating you are on the right track.
If you are a bit impatient with your art projects this acrylic gouache paint is perfect for you. Of course, you do not have to be impatient, to enjoy this art medium. You may only have a few minutes to fit a fun hobby or an art and craft project. This acrylic gouache is also great for you. Even if you have the time, I still think acrylic gouache is a fantastic painting medium to try!
How to get inspiration for your acrylic gouache painting
Gather ideas from projects and colors around the house to create a color palette. If you love gardening and planting flowers, take a couple of pictures and explore the shapes, textures, and how the color varies with the light.
Look at vases, candle holders, picture frames, and other items at home and study their patterns and textures.
Take a look at pictures of your favorite vacations or places you would like to visit.
Decide what to create.
How to paint a simple flower using acrylic gouache
For this DIY I chose to paint a simple flower. I love painting flowers. You can see that my portfolio is just full of flower prints (see my portfolio here).
Gather some acrylic gouache paint, paintbrushes, watercolor paper, a pencil, an eraser, and your ideas.
Materials recommended for collage art:
- Acrylic Gouache Paint
- Paint brushes
- Watercolor paper
- Ultra fine point permanent marker
- pencil and eraser
First, lightly sketch your design on the watercolor paper. A good tip if you need to erase anything, make sure to use an old brush to remove the eraser shavings. This way you avoid introducing any oils from your hands into the watercolor paper.
Set out your colors in a color palette. A small amount of pea size is a good starting point. You can always add more and avoid wasting any unused paint.
Layout your first layer of color using color variations to create some contrast.
Add some shadows by adding a darker version of the color. You can darken the color by adding the contrasting color in the color wheel.
Add highlights to your design to give it more realism.
Lastly, add the line work using the ultra-fine permanent marker. In this case, I used black but experiment with other colors in your color palette.
You can place your art in a frame and use it for home decor or fold the paper and use it as an original thank you card. You can also digitize your art and upload it to Print on Demand sites to get products with your own designs. I show you how to digitize your art in this post. Most importantly be proud of your work and enjoy the process.
